Straight out of the box..

If you are reading this you’re probably a collector of 1:18 scale models are at the very least interested in the subject or the car, you’ll know that diecast models from the early 90’s to the 2010’s were mostly diecast, these days 2020’s models are mostly resin and diecasts do exist but not in the numbers they used to. so it was a pleasure to acquire this Norev 1:18 scale Nissan GT-R in Blue, and like early Norev models its not sealed, so this will be a good look at this apparently nice looking model from Norev.

In detail the exterior.

So lets start with the exterior of the models, I think its fair to say that this car is quite a pop culture sensation and most people who know a little bit of performance cars would know of this car, either from the Fast and Furious Movies, YouTube videos or Games like Forza or Gran Tursimo. Its a departure from the R34 both in terms of body styling and engine leaving the previous 6 cylinder engine for a twin turbo V6. I was not an early adopter of the New GT-R and its taken a decade for it to grow on me.

Starting on the front nose on the GT-R it has a low rounded front bumper with a small GTR badge in front of the small grille, its very aerodynamic and sports very little features, moving on seamlessly to the bonnet which has two small vents with black mesh inserts, its elongated lights are reminiscent of the Nissan 350Z models, look I’m coming over as I don’t like it, but this is base model so the front isn’t much of a talking point, however its a big wide car and still imposes itself with some aggression and brutishness!

So flicking onto a side profile the GT-R really starts to send the message that it means business, the big wide front wings with integrated cooling vents the angular design of that vent is a stark contrast from the front and the door lines and wedge shape body with low side skirts make the car sit low and hug the ground, its really starting to look like a car that’s going demand your attention. The sleek door handles and the big low stamped out swage line running from the front wing breaks the tall door up, the rear quarter panel bulges out front the front creating a wider rear to accommodate those large rear tyres.

The rear of the model now retains the iconic Skyline twin lens design with an updated sunken in design, if you didn’t know this was from the skyline family you do now! The rear folded over spoiler understated but necessary sits aloft a rather big ‘arse end’ with the bumper seamlessly joined to the boot and lower diffuser which houses 2 twin exhausts which are almost as large as the lights – these are a clear message you wont be behind this car for long!

The huge wheels are well done a shod with rubber tyres, they turn with the steering wheel and have a little travel in them. Finished in gloss black paint the multi spoke design compliment the GTR’s styling perfectly.

In detail the interior space.

Now on to something different, as this is a fully openable model, starting with the bonnet (hood for you Americans out there, you’ll find a nicely detailed engine bay which can be nicely displayed if you like to display them opened, the dog legs of the bonnet are chunky but the do allow the bonnet to stay open at least on the model they do. when shut the lines are clean and level.

The doors open up to a LHD version, that doesn’t deter me as I don’t have to drive it! and I own a LHD Chevy van so it wouldn’t be a problem anyway 🙂 the interior is good for the price point, not great but its a budget model in the grand schemes of things, the buttons and clocks are detailed enough that to the naked eye it looks good but so you are aware there is no carpeting. the door hinges are dogs legs so they don’t ruin the door cards look when shut.

The boot opens, again dog legs but functional, there’s not a lot about the boot is just a square plastic space that opens and closes.

Verdict?

A nice return to diecast model with opening features, ad worthy addition if you particularly want a diecast opening model and not a resin version and a Kyosho or AutoArt is out of your financial reach. I bought this model as I needed a GTR to replace my Bburago version, I’m very pleased with it and would defiantly recommend this model from Norev.

Pros:

  • Good value for money
  • Great paint work
  • Opening parts
  • Diecast

Cons:

  • dog legs might put you off
  • May be scarce after 2020?
