Straight out of the box..
Land Rover models have been around in 1:18 scale for a while now, but these newer ones from Kyosho are excellent , so far I have encountered 3 different versions that are significantly different from each other. These are the heritage version, the adventure special edition and a normal black 110 defender – there may be others. As with most dealer editions they come in branded clamshell box.
This review will be short as I have two others to review, just focusing on the details on each model and more pictures than normal, I don’t want you to have read 3 reviews that are cut and paste affairs! So for all intents and purposes this is review 1 of 3.
In detail the exterior.
You’d be correct in saying that this is not the genre that I collect, but I have point out that I do review other models outside my own collecting habits, there will be plenty of variety on the site eventually but for now I try to will build up to a nice eclectic collection of diecast models.
So lets move on the the model.. this is a faithful replica and looks stunning , finished in metallic green paint, the front sports a great set of detailed headlamps and those 1960’s style pointy indicators. The grille of course in very functional and the plain bumper has plastic end caps, the big chunky bonnet opens to reveal the engine detail. The hinge work is great on this model.
This particular model has nice Land Rover Mud flaps, fully hinged doors and some spot rivet detailing, the roof is painted in creamy white finish and features the nice moulded top winds, this version has the ‘HUE 166’ lettering on the wing – sure if its army related or an old style number plate.
The rear end has the old style lights, with coloured lenses and rear tyre, the only difference over the Adventure model is the land rover on the mud flaps and the rear lamps colouration .
The wheels are finished in the same green as the car and have the off-road tyre detailing.
In detail the interior space.
Inside replicates the basic interior of a 110 defender, it does have carpet which is questionable in a car that would be used in rugged, dirty outdoor environments but I believe this to be a recent special edition. The doors open wide for good access, almost 90 degrees. dash and details are well presented.
Opening the rear door , you can see the twin seat configuration, where I think you expect an opposite bench seat set up , so this may be a modern version of an older classic. The seats are cream piped with black and the front seats have the land rover emblem on them.
Verdict?
A very nice model and I think that the 110 defender has a lot of dedicated followers that love the real thing and this model would make there way onto an office desk or garage, so not strictly something that a collector would buy but a great gift for a land rover fan.
I’m split with these Kyosho Defenders, there are epically good and will appeal to the general collector, but as I’ve never owned one it doesn’t warrant room in my collection for such a genre, but they are so good it’s rare for me to feel that a non-JDM vehicle needs to be in my collection.
Pros:
- Great Metallic paint
- Almost looks real!
- Good interior
- Many variations available
Cons:
- Some may not like the screwed hinges, personally they allow a better opening door
- Tyres have a white film on them, which maybe can be removed?
